The 80’s, oh the music of my people!

It takes me back to my college days, when life was (more) care-free, there was no dot-com-bubble and the music made you dance on tables (maybe that was just me.)

What’s in common?

What did the songs Sister Christian (Night Ranger), Beds are Burning (Midnight Oil), Funkytown  (Lipps Inc), or my favorite Whip It! ( Devo ) have in common?

Any guesses?

They were one hit wonders. The artists were one and done.

Now, they were a blast to listen to! We knew the lyrics by heart – and we still do.

The trouble? The celebrity wasn’t sustainable.

When you read articles on “where are they now” these talents are playing guitar for a broadway show, working for environmental and social justice causes, web designer, composer for film scores.

Certainly all noble ventures, but I’m sure very different from their original pursuits of maybe being the best band EVER!

Then you have The Rolling Stone, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, ZZ Top.

Legends and legendary!

What’s the difference between one-hit-wonders and legends?

Marketing!

And consistency.

Now, I can’t speak for the group dynamics and personal relationships, but consistency most likely plays a part here too. I mean, you have to consistently work on the relationships for them to last this long.

The legends are still here because they play to the hearts and souls of their fans (ideal customers.)

Doing it right!

They’ve given their listeners the most valuable information they need to stay connected: concert info, albums (yes vinyl), CDs, iTunes downloads, news from the tour, and of course, t-shirts!

There are interviews, memoirs, surprise gigs at local dives, and selfies with good samaritan fans (the latest with Bruce Springsteen’s).

They’ve ALL put in the work it takes to stay true to their brand, meet their fan’s needs, and produce consistently great products.

Sound familiar?

Be the rock star of your brand and create longevity with a really great marketing strategy!
